Lost Your Train Horn Gun Remote? How to Replace It, Pair a Second Remote, and Change the Fob Battery

Losing the key fob for a battery train horn gun is annoying, but it is not the end of the horn: the trigger still fires with no remote at all. Here is how a replacement fob gets matched to your horn, how to add a second remote, and how to swap the little battery inside the fob before you assume the remote is dead.

First, the good news: the trigger still works

The remote is a second way to fire the same valve the trigger fires. The receiver lives inside the horn and runs off the same tool battery as the compressor, but the trigger does not go through the receiver at all. Click a charged pack onto the rail, squeeze the grip, and the horn blasts exactly as loud as it did with the fob in your pocket. A lost remote costs you hands-free firing and distance, not decibels.

How a replacement remote gets matched to your horn

Every fob sends a coded radio signal, and the receiver in the horn only answers codes it knows. That coding is what stops a neighbor's garage remote from firing your horn, and it is also why a random keychain remote off a shelf will not work. Remote systems in this category handle the code three ways, and which one your horn uses decides how a lost fob gets replaced:

Fixed-code and learning-code fobs are what you find on horn guns and most 433 MHz remote gear; rolling code is the territory of car keys and newer garage openers. With a learning-code receiver you can add or replace a fob yourself. With a fixed-code fob, the seller has to supply one matched to your horn.

On our remote-equipped horns, matching is done before the horn ships, so a replacement or add-on is an order-and-use item rather than a programming job. Order the Extra Remote Control and tell support which horn it is for, ideally with your original order number, so the fob you receive is matched to your receiver. Some competing brands only sell an extra remote at the time you buy the horn, so if yours came from elsewhere, check that before assuming a replacement exists.

While you are at it, ask whether the standard 160-foot fob was ever the right remote for how you use the horn. Adding a second remote

A second fob is the cheapest insurance against this whole problem. Put one on your keys and one in the glovebox, the boat console, or the UTV cubby, and a lost remote becomes an inconvenience instead of a wait for shipping. Two fobs matched to one receiver work independently: nothing about the first one changes, and there is no primary or backup.

Learn-mode pairing on DIY kits and learning-code receivers

If you built your horn from a DIY kit, or own a horn that uses an off-the-shelf learning-code receiver, you can bind a new fob yourself. The receiver board has a small learn button and an LED, and the procedure is the same across most 433 MHz learning-code modules:

  • Step 1: power the receiver. Click a charged tool battery onto the horn. Point the trumpets away from you, because a successful test fires the horn.
  • Step 2: enter learn mode. Press the learn button on the receiver once. The LED starts flashing to show it is waiting for a code.
  • Step 3: press the new fob's button. The LED flashes three times to confirm the code is stored.
  • Step 4: test from a few feet away. The horn should fire. If not, repeat from step 2 and hold the fob button a little longer.

Two details trip people up. First, on many modules the number of learn-button presses selects the output mode: one press pairs a momentary output, which a horn needs so the blast stops when you let go, while two or three presses pair a toggle or latching output that leaves the horn on. If a freshly paired remote makes the horn stick on, you paired it in the wrong mode. Second, the same modules erase every stored fob when you press the learn button eight times in a row or hold it until the LED goes out. That is the right move if a fob was stolen rather than lost, since it locks the old fob out; just re-teach the fobs you still have.

Momentary output is also what the FCC expects: 47 CFR 15.231 requires a manually operated remote-control transmitter to stop transmitting within five seconds of the button being released.

Which battery is inside your fob, and how to change it

Before you replace a "dead" remote, open it. A fob that has gone from firing at 100 feet to needing three presses at 20 feet is almost always a battery on its way out, not a lost pairing. Keychain-style 433 MHz fobs use one of two batteries:

Swapping a CR2032. Most coin-cell fobs open with a small Phillips screw on the back or a fingernail slot along the seam. Note which way the cell faces before lifting it out: the flat side stamped with a plus sign is positive. Slide the new cell under its retaining clip so it sits flush on the contacts, and close the case. A CR2025 will physically fit but is thinner and holds less charge, so it may rattle loose and will run down sooner. Coin cells in an everyday-carry fob typically last two to three years, so if your remote is that old and the range has been shrinking, the battery is the first suspect.

Swapping an A23. The A23 sits in a spring holder like a tiny AA. Note the polarity marking in the holder, pull the old cell, and press the new one in with the button end toward the plus mark. Because an A23 stores about a quarter of the energy of a CR2032, fobs that use it fade sooner, and a weak A23 shows up first as shortened range.

One safety note for any coin-cell fob in a truck or house with small kids. A swallowed coin cell can burn through a child's esophagus in as little as two hours, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission counted 27 deaths and an estimated 54,300 emergency-room injuries from ingested button and coin batteries between 2011 and 2021. Under the standard adopted after Reese's Law, products made after 09/21/2024 need a battery compartment that takes a tool or two simultaneous motions to open. FAQ

Can I use a universal or cloning remote instead of buying the real one?

Only if you still have one working fob and your horn uses a fixed-code system. A cloning remote copies an existing fob's code, so with the only fob gone there is nothing to copy. Rolling-code fobs cannot be cloned at all. The matched fob from the seller is the reliable route.

Will a second remote cut the range of the first one?

No. Two fobs matched to one horn each get the same up-to-160-foot line-of-sight rating.

My replacement fob arrived and nothing happens. Now what?

Check the tool battery on the horn first, since the receiver is deaf without it, then test from 10 feet away in clear line of sight. If the trigger fires and the new fob does not, contact support with your order number. Do not open the horn's housing to look for the receiver; on a pre-built unit there is nothing user-serviceable in there.

Is the remote worth replacing at all?
