What a direct-fit kit actually asks of your half-ton

Read past the "100% bolt-on" line on any kit page and the install list looks the same across brands:

  • Drop the spare. The horns typically mount under the bed floor, so the spare comes down for access, and on some kits it goes back up afterward. The spare-tire-delete style kits skip that step by putting the whole system in the spare's location, which means the spare does not come back.
  • Find room for the tank and compressor. Kleinn's F-150 install for the 2009 to 2014 body mounts the tank and compressor to the outside of the passenger-side frame rail under the cab. Newer kits use a 1.5-gallon tank on the GM 1500 and a 3-gallon tank on the Ram 1500, both on brackets that bolt to factory holes.
  • Wire it. A relay for the compressor, a 25-amp fuse at the battery, a switched 12-volt feed so the compressor sleeps with the key off, and a trigger wire to the solenoid. On a 2021-and-newer F-150 the common method taps the horn fuse with an add-a-circuit because the horn relay is inside the body control module rather than a swappable relay in the fuse box.
  • Drill for the button. The one hole the "no-drill" kits still need is a 3/4-inch hole in the dash or console for the pushbutton, unless you wire into the factory horn instead.
