Two established examples show how the numbers work. One major horn retailer sells the identical horn for $49.99 and rates it at 123.7 dB. The Wolo Bad Boy runs about $50.95 at NAPA and its own maker rates it at 123.5 dB. They're legitimate, well-built horns. They are simply loud car horns, not train horns.

The no-name "150 dB" and "300 dB" snail horns on marketplace sites are worse. One 300 dB listing admits in its own fine print that actual output is "110db ± 5." Guides that measure these electromagnetic horns put them at roughly 118 to 120 dB at one meter, and a stock car horn is already 100 to 110 dB. So a $25 snail horn is a modest upgrade over stock, and the label is fiction. Nothing the size of your fist beats that.

For context, federal rule 49 CFR 229.129 requires a real locomotive horn to produce only 96 to 110 dB(A) measured 100 feet in front of the engine. Real train sound is about big trumpets and lots of air, not a number printed on a box.

$80 to $180: import compressor-and-tank kits

This is where "train horn" starts to mean trumpets and compressed air. A Viking Horns 4-trumpet kit with a 1.5-gallon tank and 150 PSI compressor lists at $93.59 at Walmart and claims 149 dB. A VEVOR 4-trumpet kit with a 0.8-gallon tank and 120 PSI compressor runs around $89.90. Step up to a Vixen Horns 4-trumpet, 1-gallon, 150 PSI kit and you're at $176.97. All of them ship with a solenoid valve, air line, and a pressure switch, and all of them claim numbers within a decibel of each other.

Here's what the sticker leaves out. A compressor kit is a project, not a product. The tank needs a dry mounting spot on the frame, the compressor needs a relay and fused 12V feed, and the trumpets need a location where they won't fill with road spray. Industry cost guides put a full air-system install on a pickup at 4 to 6 hours, or $300 to $600 at a shop, with US shop labor averaging $120 to $160 per hour. Do it yourself and the kit stays under $200, if you count your weekend at zero. Pay a shop and a $94 kit becomes a $400 to $700 horn.

The other cost is durability. A 0.8-gallon tank refills fast but empties fast, so blasts are short. Cheap fittings are the usual leak point, and a leaking tank keeps the compressor cycling until it burns out. The dB claim on the listing is the least reliable spec on the page; the tank size and compressor duty cycle tell you far more. What the name brands sell under $200

If you want an established brand, $200 buys trumpets and nothing else. HornBlasters' Flatlaw and Mini Outlaw horns list at $219.99 apiece with no compressor or tank. Kleinn's Model 220 "Mini Beast" dual trumpets are $142.95, again horns only. The cheapest complete kit either company sells is a HornBlasters open-box Mini Outlaw package at $249.99, while their regular entry kits run $600 to $675 and the full-size Conductor's Special and Kleinn HK7 land at $785.99 and $769.95. Honest, tested trumpets cost real money, and the air system to feed them costs as much again.

That's the arithmetic behind the general cost guides that say a mid-range kit with a tank and compressor "begins at about $200 and quickly goes past $300 and $400," and a good, durable kit runs $699 to $1,500. Under $200 in tank-kit land buys either an import gamble or half of a name-brand system.
