The short answer
A train horn plays a chord because each trumpet is a separate instrument tuned to its own note, and all of them fire at the same time. Trumpet length sets the pitch: longer trumpets play lower notes, shorter trumpets play higher ones. Railroads moved from single-note horns to chords in the 1950s because one loud note was too easy to mistake for a truck. Why locomotive horns went from one note to a chord
Early diesel locomotives carried single-note air horns, and that caused a real safety problem. When drivers near a grade crossing heard a single blaring horn, many of them expected a truck, not a train, and collisions followed. The fix was to give the diesel a voice like the steam whistle it replaced: several notes at once.
The engineer behind that fix was Robert Swanson, a British Columbia railway inspector who had built steam whistles as a hobby. In 1948 he wrote the province's boiler code and required a five-note whistle on provincially regulated locomotives, versus the three-note requirement on federal lines. In 1949 he built the first five-chime air horn, and by 1950 his company AirChime had a production multi-chime horn on the market. Each chime held one note, and with compressed air behind them the stack was far louder than a whistle and impossible to confuse with a one-note truck horn.
The chord itself kept changing. The five-chime K5H of the mid-1950s was tuned to a D-sharp minor sixth chord, a dark, eerie sound that many railroads ran for decades. When Amtrak wanted something less unsettling in the mid-1970s, Swanson retuned the K5H into the K5LA, which plays a brighter B major sixth chord. It became the standard on Amtrak and CSX locomotives and is the sound most Americans picture. Its five bells sound roughly D-sharp near 311 Hz, F-sharp near 370 Hz, G-sharp near 415 Hz, B near 494 Hz, and a second D-sharp an octave up near 622 Hz.
One thing the federal rulebook never specified is the chord. Under 49 CFR 229.129, a lead locomotive horn has to produce between 96 and 110 dB(A) measured 100 feet in front of the locomotive. The regulation covers loudness. The chord is an industry design choice.
How one trumpet makes one note
Every trumpet on a chime horn, whether it is bolted to a locomotive roof or to a battery horn gun, works the same way. Pressurized air enters a power chamber behind a thin metal diaphragm and makes it flutter hundreds of times per second, the same job a trumpeter's lips do. The flared bell in front of the diaphragm turns that buzz into a clean, loud note and aims it forward.
The bell's length is what sets the pitch. A longer bell holds a longer column of air, that column vibrates more slowly, and the note comes out lower. A shorter bell does the opposite. That is why the trumpets on any multi-trumpet horn are visibly different lengths: each one is cut to speak one specific note. A locomotive horn draws roughly 125 to 140 psi from the train's main reservoir. Each bell also produces a stack of overtones above its fundamental, which gives a train horn its brassy edge. Put five bells together and you are hearing five harmonic series interlocking, not five clean frequencies.
Why the chord is tuned to be a little "off"
If a horn maker wanted a pretty sound, they would tune the bells to a clean major triad and stop. Instead, the standard five-chime horn adds a sixth and doubles the root an octave up, and some makers went further and cast bells slightly out of tune on purpose. Leslie is widely reported to have tuned certain SuperTyfon horns off-key on the theory that a chord that is not quite right makes a more effective warning, and the number 25 bell on its three-chime RS3L, which sounds near 250 Hz, is famous among horn collectors for being cast out of tune.
The physics behind that decision is called beating. When two tones are close in frequency, their waves drift in and out of step, and the combined sound pulses at a rate equal to the difference between the two frequencies. Below about 20 pulses per second you hear it as a slow throb in loudness. Between roughly 20 and 150 pulses per second the throb blurs into a harsh, fluttering texture that acousticians call roughness. Only when the notes get far enough apart does the ear separate them into two clean tones.
Chime horns live in that roughness zone. Overtones from one bell land close to, but not on, overtones from the next, and the result is the grinding texture that makes a train horn sound urgent rather than musical. A single note cannot do this. Two notes do it a little. Four or five do it across the whole spectrum, which is why the sound feels bigger than the meter reading suggests.
