Type "M18 battery" into any marketplace site and you'll find clone packs for a quarter of the OEM price, all promising the same voltage and more amp-hours. Will one of those run a battery-powered train horn gun? Almost certainly yes. Should it? That depends on what's actually inside the pack — and independent teardowns show the range runs from "decent value" to "smoked during a basic safety test."

The short answer: most aftermarket packs will fire the horn — that's not the real question

A train horn gun is an 18V-class device with a standard battery rail. If a pack physically clicks onto that rail and delivers nominal 18 volts, the compressor spins and the horn sounds. Aftermarket packs are built to mimic the OEM interface exactly, so fitment is rarely the problem.

The real question splits into three tiers, because "aftermarket" covers very different products:

Good news first: a horn gun is an easier load than a drill

Before the scary part, some honest perspective. A train horn gun is a burst-load device — the compressor only draws current for the second or two you hold the trigger, then the load drops to essentially nothing. That's a far gentler duty cycle than a saw or grinder running flat-out for minutes, which is exactly the kind of sustained high-amp draw that pushes weak cells into overheating.

So a mediocre pack that would struggle on a jobsite can still honk along fine on a horn. Even a small genuine 2.0Ah pack is good for roughly 400–600 short blasts per charge, so an aftermarket pack with less real capacity than its label claims will still deliver plenty of blasts. What you will notice is voltage sag: tired or undersized cells drop voltage under load, and on a horn that shows up as a slightly weaker, flatter blast that fades faster when you hold the trigger down.

What testing actually found inside cheap clone packs

A widely shared independent test compared three M18™-style clone packs (priced $22–$30) against a genuine Milwaukee® XC6.0 pack (about $90). The findings line up with what teardown channels have reported for years:

  • Cheaper cells. The genuine 6.0Ah pack used ten 21700 cells rated around 3,140mAh each. Every clone used ten cheaper, lower-capacity 18650 cells — while claiming equal or higher amp-hours on the label.
  • Far less real runtime. On an identical 150-watt load, the clones ran 15:50 to 25:20. The genuine pack ran 39:15 — roughly 1.5 to 2.5 times longer than packs claiming similar capacity.
  • Weaker protection. In a dead-short test, the genuine pack's protection tripped at 390 amps. One clone cut off at 227A, another at just 112A — and the worst pack never cleanly tripped at all: it kept discharging for about 8 seconds and started smoking.

That last line is the whole story. The battery management system (BMS) is the difference between a fault that ends with a dead pack and a fault that ends with a fire. It's also the component clone makers cut first, because you can't see it from the outside.

The three real risks with off-brand packs

1. Fire — mostly during charging, not during use. Lithium-ion fires are rare, but the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission notes that many of the serious home battery fires it has seen started at night, while packs were charging and everyone was asleep. Its standing advice: use the charger the manufacturer specifies, and never charge lithium-ion batteries unattended or overnight. A clone pack with a weak BMS is most dangerous at exactly that moment — sitting on a charger that expects OEM electronics to be managing the cells.

2. Fake capacity. Inflated amp-hour labels are endemic in the clone market. In one hobbyist load test, four aftermarket packs labeled 3,000mAh measured between 1,156 and 1,658mAh — roughly half the sticker rating at best. On a horn that means fewer blasts per charge and earlier sag; on the price tag it means the "bargain" per-amp-hour math was never real.

3. Warranty and certification. The Power Tool Institute notes that running non-OEM batteries can void a power tool's warranty, and that clone packs are frequently not listed by any recognized lab — even when they carry a printed UL or CSA mark, the mark itself can be counterfeit. If a questionable pack damages your charger or other tools on the same platform, you're on your own.

If you're going to run non-OEM anyway, do it smarter

Plenty of horn owners run third-party packs without drama. If that's you, stack the odds in your favor:

  • Buy a brand, not a listing. A real company name, a reachable support address, and a verifiable UL or ETL listing separate legitimate third-party packs from disposable clones.
  • Treat the price as data. The Power Tool Institute's rule of thumb applies: if the price sounds too good to be true, it probably is. A "9.0Ah" pack for $25 is telling you what's inside.
  • Buy from authorized channels. Marketplace listings on big-box sites can still be third-party sellers, which is where counterfeits of even genuine-branded packs show up.
  • Charge attended, on a hard surface. Never overnight, never on the truck seat, never while you're away — per the CPSC guidance above.
  • Watch the pack, not just the horn. Swelling, a hot pack after light use, or a charger that keeps erroring are all reasons to retire the battery immediately — and recycle it at a battery drop-off, not the trash.
